Watch out when driving in Germany / Eifel area: oil-terrorist active!

The Eifel hosts nice scenary, little mountains and corresponding curvy roads. And as the winter is having a slow start this year, a lot of motorcycle touring enthousiasts will happily use this holiday season to ride, and will certainly head to areas like Eifel in Germany and Ardennes in Belgium to enjoy the long driving season. Eifel and Ardennes are very popular among German, Dutch, and Belgium motorcyclists for leisure riding.

For those heading to the German Eifel a warning to be cautious and on the watch out, as last weekend an “oil-terrorist” (or movement) has been active again with spoiling oil in a curve which lead to 2 Dutch Harley Davidson riders to get into problems. One rider could circumvent the oil spot by moving over onto the opposite lane on which there was luckly no one driving, while the other was less fortunate and fell down resulting in damage to his Harley. This all happened in the surroundings of Gentingen.

The “spilling” of oil in curves is reoccuring for some years in Germany; both in the south (Bavaria, area Allgau) as well as in the Eifel. It has resulted in several serious accidents involving motorcycles and cars, with damage varying from material only, to persons getting injured and even killed. There has been cases where oil had been contained in wine bottles and broken on the road. Please keep alert when scanning the curves for oil and/or glass, and maintain a speed which still allows you to act. Also be on the watch out for anything suspicious as this person / these persons need to be catched, fined, penalized and taken to court! When seeing something suspicious: try to gather as much information as possible (car license plate + brand + model + color, description of person/persons, when possible pictures) and report to the police / authorities. Also report to the police in case nothing has happened to you or others with you while there was oil spilled on the road, so that they can take precautions to prevent others to have an accident, and can collect (fresh) proof. Following numbers can be used in case of emergency: police under telephone number 110, rescue services under telephone number 112.
